Liverpool Move to Hijack Manchester City’s Bid for Florian Wirtz Amid Bayern Interest
Liverpool have intensified their pursuit of Florian Wirtz, entering the race to sign the Bayer Leverkusen star and potentially hijacking Manchester City’s long-standing interest, according to reports from Kicker and Mail Sport.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has emerged as one of Europe’s hottest talents following a sensational 2023–24 campaign in which he helped Leverkusen complete an unbeaten Bundesliga season and claim the DFB-Pokal. With 33 goal contributions in 44 appearances, Wirtz has become the most sought-after player in this summer’s transfer market.
City, Liverpool, and Bayern All in the Race
Manchester City have been monitoring Wirtz for months, seeing him as a long-term successor to Kevin De Bruyne, who is departing after a decade at the Etihad. City’s Director of Football Hugo Viana, in collaboration with outgoing chief Txiki Begiristain, is leading their efforts to secure a deal.
However, Liverpool have now joined the race, with reports suggesting the Premier League champions under new manager Arne Slot recently held direct talks with Wirtz and his representatives — the same day City also met the player.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich remain a strong contender, with journalist Christian Falk reporting that Wirtz has already agreed personal terms with the Bavarian giants. Bayern are preparing a €100 million (£84.7 million) bid, but this falls short of Leverkusen’s £126 million valuation. CEO Fernando Carro previously hinted the fee could reach €150 million, though later walked back the statement.
Contract Situation and Future Plans
Wirtz is under contract with Leverkusen until 2027, giving the German club full control over his immediate future. His mother reportedly prefers he remains at the club for another season, potentially delaying any move until 2026, when Bayern are also willing to return with another bid if needed.
Despite this, Wirtz is believed to be open to a Premier League move, having softened his stance on joining City, and now listening to interest from Liverpool. Real Madrid have also tracked the player in the past, though the current battle appears to be centered between Liverpool, City, and Bayern.
What’s Next
Bayern Munich remain favourites due to Wirtz’s personal preference and existing talks, but must significantly raise their offer.
Liverpool are serious contenders and have accelerated negotiations in a bid to leapfrog their rivals.
Manchester City are still firmly in the race, driven by the need to replace De Bruyne.
With all parties in discussion and Leverkusen yet to receive an acceptable bid, the next few weeks will be crucial in determining whether Wirtz departs this summer — and where he lands if he does.
