Reports suggest that Liverpool have identified a “perfect replacement” for Darwin Núñez, as new head coach Arne Slot is reportedly growing frustrated with the striker’s inconsistency.
Liverpool signed Núñez for an initial fee of around £64 million from Benfica after his explosive 34-goal campaign in the 2021/22 season. Despite some early promise, his time at Anfield has been mixed.
The deal, heavily influenced by former manager Jürgen Klopp, went ahead despite the club’s data analysts reportedly raising concerns about the player’s suitability. While Núñez has shown flashes of brilliance, he has struggled to consistently deliver in the Premier League.
This season, the Uruguayan forward has started only seven league matches, scoring four goals and providing three assists across 24 appearances in all competitions. His raw talent is evident, but frequent missed chances have raised doubts about his long-term role at the club.
Now, Liverpool are said to be targeting Napoli striker Victor Osimhen as a potential replacement. According to Caught Offside, Slot and the Liverpool hierarchy view the Nigerian international as an ideal fit and have issued a warning to Núñez regarding his performances.
Whether Liverpool will make a move for Osimhen this summer remains to be seen, but pressure is clearly mounting on Núñez.
