HEARTWARMING MOMENT: The family of Luis Diaz got together in Liverpool to commemorate their dad’s emotional birthday

Luis Díaz’s father marked a deeply emotional 55th birthday on Sunday, surrounded by love, family, and a wave of gratitude, thanks in large part to Liverpool FC.

Following the harrowing kidnapping ordeal in Colombia, where Luis Manuel Díaz and his wife Cilenis Marulanda were targeted, Liverpool has gone above and beyond to support their No. 7 star and his loved ones. While Marulanda was quickly rescued, Díaz Sr. endured over two weeks in captivity before being safely released.

His reunion with Luis was nothing short of powerful, especially as he watched his son score twice in Colombia’s stunning 2-1 victory over Brazil. That emotional moment was just the beginning of a meaningful family holiday, as the club arranged a private flight to Merseyside, bringing the Díaz family together for the festive season.

The joy didn’t stop there. Diaz Sr.’s 55th birthday was celebrated in full at his son’s home. The celebration, organized by Luis’s wife, Gera Ponce, brought together the entire family—including brothers Jesus and Roller, and sister Anny—for a heartfelt, intimate gathering.

On Instagram, Díaz Sr. shared his gratitude:

“I want to thank God for allowing me to celebrate another year of life. My daughter-in-law, my wife, my kids, and my family for allowing me to spend this lovely day [in this manner]. May God bless you, my love for you is unwavering.”

Their Christmas on Merseyside promises to be a peaceful and joyful one—a much-needed contrast to the trauma they endured not long ago. While it’s unclear how long they’ll stay in the UK, it’s expected the family will remain through Christmas and perhaps into the New Year.

Speaking after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Man City, Jürgen Klopp reflected on the situation with heartfelt sincerity:

“Now that they are here, he will have more moments to share. The fact that the family is together and everything is fine makes me happy for them all… there was nothing nice about that situation, with all of its terrible characteristics, yet the group’s response was fantastic. It’s great that they’ve finally arrived. Of course, it’s a great combination for the family around Christmas.”

In the face of darkness, the Díaz family has found light—and Liverpool’s unwavering support has helped them every step of the way.
