‘Very good athlete’: Liverpool pursue £70 million forward, with star’s old manager excited by Anfield whispers

Antoine Semenyo’s rise from non-league hopeful to £65 million-rated Premier League forward is a testament to both raw potential and the right development environment—and Liverpool, led by new sporting director Richard Hughes, are clearly taking notice.

Hughes, fresh off a highly successful stint at Bournemouth where he unearthed and developed talent like Nathan Ake, Aaron Ramsdale, and Milos Kerkez, is no stranger to spotting gems before they shine. With Arne Slot now at the helm at Anfield, Hughes’ fingerprints are already starting to show on Liverpool’s summer shortlist.

Semenyo, signed by Bournemouth in 2023 for a modest £10 million, has exploded this season. His tally of 10 goals—eight in the Premier League—has made him one of the division’s most exciting late bloomers. His pace, physicality, and improved end product have drawn attention from Manchester United, Newcastle, and now, the league leaders themselves.

He’s far from the only Cherries talent catching Liverpool’s eye either. Milos Kerkez is viewed as a potential long-term successor to Andy Robertson, while Dean Huijsen—a former Juventus prodigy—is another Hughes-era find now being watched closely.

Semenyo’s backstory adds even more intrigue to his trajectory. Handed his debut at Bristol City by Lee Johnson in 2018, he bypassed the traditional academy system, having developed instead at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College. Johnson describes him as raw but willing, saying, “Once he understood what was needed, he just took off.”

And he’s already left his mark at Anfield—opening the scoring inside three minutes during Bournemouth’s visit in August 2023 before Liverpool stormed back to win.

Now, with Liverpool renowned for transforming talented forwards into elite stars (think Salah, Mane, Firmino, Jota), Semenyo looks every inch the kind of player Hughes and Slot might build around in the next era at Anfield.

In Johnson’s words: “Talent is everywhere. Give them the right environment, develop them—and you’ve got a real chance.” Liverpool may be poised to do just that.
