Arne Slot owes Federico Chiesa a big apology after he shines despite Liverpool’s EFL Cup Final Defeat to Newcastle

This sunny afternoon in London presented a challenging game to predict, as Liverpool arrived as a fatigued and overworked side, recently eliminated from the Champions League at the round of 16. Newcastle appeared lively and eager from the outset, suggesting that they might overwhelm their illustrious opponents with sheer strength and determination in the early stages.

Arne Slot has consistently demonstrated his tactical prowess, adeptly adjusting and reinventing his strategy at halftime. His pitch-side inspiration led to a much-improved second-half performance from his team. Despite having a squad filled with footballing leaders and experience, it was clear that without Trent Alexander-Arnold (due to injury), the reigning EFL champions struggled to break down a team designed to counter and sit deep when out of possession.

The first goal for Newcastle scored late in the first half, only heightened their tactical resolve, compelling Liverpool’s Dutch head coach to respond and foster a more dynamic second half for his Anfield Giants.

Unfortunately for the traveling supporters from Merseyside, the revitalized Reds did not show up for the second half either. It wasn’t until the latter stages of the match that one player began to exhibit the fight and desire necessary for a final victory. Federico Chiesa, who had been on the periphery for so long, finally made his mark on the famous Wembley pitch, injecting hope and urgency into the game, especially compared to his teammates.

The Red’s consolation goal came from the renowned Italian, who showcased his determination to win with an all-action performance. This man of the match recognition goes to a Liverpool player eager for an opportunity to shine, and he deserves more chances in the upcoming weeks of the season. Although his goal and surge of energy came too late, it’s vital to acknowledge someone who displayed a true will to win.

Tired legs should create openings for others, so I hope this Italy international, with a point to prove, will begin to receive the Anfield minutes he has rightfully earned.
