After firing Amorim, MU considers appointing Xavi as replacement

Manchester United will have to make a quick decision on Ruben Amorim’s future, with another European giant being linked with the Portuguese’s preferred replacement at Old Trafford.

Manchester United were knocked out of the FA Cup on 3 March after losing to Fulham on penalties, despite the game ending in a 1-1 draw. It was the latest setback in a disappointing season for the Old Trafford outfit, and their only chance of silverware will come in the Europa League, where they face Real Sociedad in midweek.

It is understood that United are seriously considering the future of manager Ruben Amorim, although sacking the Portuguese – who was only appointed in November – would cost around €24m.

Xavi has been touted as a candidate to replace Amorim, with the former Barcelona boss having been approached about taking the job in October 2024. However, Xavi has turned down the offer mid-season, believing that Ruud van Nistelrooy will remain in charge until the summer.

Although Manchester United remain interested in Xavi, their chances of landing the Spaniard may be slim.

According to Fichajes, AC Milan are keen on signing Xavi, with Sergio Conceicao’s future at the San Siro in doubt after a run of poor results, including a 2-1 home defeat to Lazio on Sunday.

Similar to Amorim, Conceicao has also struggled to improve Milan’s form, although his situation is not as dire. After 17 games, Conceicao has won just eight, including four in Serie A.

With Milan down to ninth in the table after three straight defeats over the weekend, Xavi is increasingly a target at the San Siro. And it seems that if Manchester United are serious about signing him, they will have to act quickly.
