Marcus Rashford, who came off the bench to set up both of Aston Villa’s goals in their 2-1 victory over Chelsea, has been hailed as the team’s new “hero.”
Villa was behind at halftime until super sub Rashford was sent on, and he twice set up Marco Asensio, including for his spectacular winner in the 89th minute.
The attacker has had a striking start to life in the Midlands since joining on loan from Manchester United in January following a falling out with Ruben Amorim. Jamie Redknapp thinks his performance on Saturday will have delighted fans.
Redknapp stated on Sky Sports, “I have to admit, I’m sure the manager was thinking about who he was going to take off.” Fortunately from his point of view, he kept Asensio on even if he might have brought him off.
It was one substitution that changed everything. He was outstanding.
“The Holte End has a new hero in Marcus Rashford, who arrived with vigor, excitement, and all the qualities you look for in a player.”
He was great and gave them that boost, but it’s the other aspects of the game, like the running and the drive. The distinction was established by Marcus Rashford.
You can see the crowd in the background as he has came on in the last few games with their support. He’s looking really good as we approach the last third. He seemed to be gritting his teeth once more.
Following his entrance, Youri Tielemans pointed out the threat Rashford offered down the left-hand side, and his teammates were equally gushing about him.
Midfielder Tielemans told Sky Sports, “Very pleased, especially the way he’s performing now, especially with the two assists that he got today.” And pay attention, Marcus has the ability to intimidate anybody. 1 against 1 or even 1 against 2.
Because he provides us with something more on that left side, his style of play is crucial to us.
“I believe you could tell he was dangerous every time he got the ball today.” And with a lot more time under his belt, he should recover.
“We know all the quality of Marcus,” Asensio continued. He was quite helpful to us. Additionally, I want to thank Marcus for the two assists.
With Villa struggling following an early strike from Enzo Fernandez, Unai Emery looked to the 27-year-old. Rashford nearly instantly delivered, meeting a deep crossfield ball from Matty Cash and slicing across goal for Asensio to put home.
Replays revealed that Rashford had perfectly timed his dart to the near post, bringing Villa back level after the goal was first disallowed for offside.
After Asensio picked up his ball and blasted a feeble attempt that swerved through Filip Jorgensen, Rashford also played a part in the action that pulled the roof off.
“He’s been loved as soon as he’s entered the building,” said pundit Steve Sidwell, adding that Rashford has the “bit between his teeth again.”
