Chido Obi performed Marcus Rashford’s trademark celebration as he scored a hat-trick to fire Manchester United’s Under-18s to a 5-1 victory over Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup.
Obi, 17, was again United’s star and copied Rashford by pointing to his temple after netting his second at Leigh Sports Village on Wednesday.
The Danish youth international further underlined his credentials in the drubbing of Chelsea to help United reach the quarter-finals.
His first was the equaliser after the Blues had taken the lead as he latched on to a Jaydan Kamason through ball before finding the net with a first-time finish.
Obi then put United 4-1 in front after being teed up by Gabriele Biancheri and completed his hat-trick by pouncing on a loose ball in the box and firing home just after the hour mark.
Rashford, on loan at Aston Villa until the end of the season, often did the celebration after scoring for United and Obi paid homage to the exiled star following his fourth goal on the night.
Victory for United set up a meeting with Obi’s former club Arsenal in the quarter-finals.
His hat-trick took his goals in this season’s FA Youth Cup to seven and, at a time where United’s first team are struggling to score, may have further alerted Ruben Amorim to his talent.
Obi left Arsenal for United last summer. During his time at the Gunners, he scored a record-breaking 32 goals in just 20 appearances for their Under-18 side.
His return last season was the most ever scored by an Arsenal player at that level in a single campaign, beating the previous record held by Folarin Balogun.
Last season Obi scored 10 goals in one game for Arsenal Under-16s against Liverpool.
