Ruben Amorim defends Rasmus Hojlund after frustrated forward’s goal drought hits eight games – as Man United boss admits a ‘team problem’

Ruben Amorim has encouraged Rasmus Hojlund to avoid becoming ‘frustrated’ following his failure to score in Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Leicester City in the FA Cup on Friday night.

After going a goal down at Old Trafford, United secured their place in the fifth round thanks to a late header from Harry Maguire, who was in an offside position.

Hojlund, who started as the striker, had a challenging match, failing to register a single shot on target. The Denmark international, signed from Atalanta for £72 million in 2023, has not scored in his last 14 appearances for United.

Amorim emphasized that the striker should remain ‘calm’ during this difficult phase leading the attack. “I think it’s a positive thing. I wouldn’t criticize this type of behavior,” he said, referring to his conversation with Hojlund during the second half against Leicester. “He needs to realize that sometimes he has to contribute without touching the ball.

“He shouldn’t get too frustrated because the next play might present an opportunity. He needs to stay composed. This is part of his character; many players from his background always strive for more and feel the pressure of criticism.

“It’s a good trait, and he will improve. A striker relies on a strong team to provide quality passes, and right now, we’re not supporting our forwards effectively.”

Alejandro Garnacho, who came on as a substitute at halftime, was a standout performer for United after a lackluster first half against Leicester. When asked about Garnacho’s response after being benched for United’s 2-1 win against Manchester City in December, Amorim said, “He doesn’t need a major change. It’s all about maintaining standards.

“It’s about training well, absorbing information, and understanding that we want to assist them in adapting to different systems. It’s not complicated. He’s made significant strides. He sat on the bench for five consecutive games, but every time he came on, he was a different player, receptive to feedback and playing well.

“It’s the little things that matter, not anything drastic. I’m really pleased with his progress.”
