Crystal Palace leapfrogged Manchester United in the Premier League table with a brilliant 2-0 victory at Old Trafford thanks to Jean-Philippe Mateta’s second-half double.

With Man Utd struggling as much as they are this season, it was hardly a surprise to see Palace score the opening goal of the game. It was even less of a shock to see Mateta score that goal, as the French striker continued his excellent form.

After Maxence Lacroix’s header had bounced off the crossbar, Mateta reacted quickest to poke the ball into the back of the net in the 64th minute and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

He added a second and doubled Palace’s tally in the 89th minute. The south London side broke away and Daniel Muñoz was set clear before squaring to Mateta to slam the ball past André Onana and seal victory. Today’s brace means that he’s now scored six times in five Premier League appearances since the turn of the year.

Overall, the 27-year-old has been a consistent source of goals since Oliver Glasner’s first game in charge of the Eagles on 24 February last year. Only four players have scored more often in the Premier League, while his 23 goals are 15 more than any other Palace player.

Man Utd have now just won four of their 13 Premier League games under Ruben Amorim since his first league match in charge back in November, while just as worrying is the fact that they have conceded six goals more (22) than they have scored themselves (16) under the Portuguese.

This was United’s seventh home defeat in the Premier League this season, equalling their worst tally ever in a single campaign of the competition (level with 2013-14). The last time that they lost more league games at home in a single season was back in 1962-63 (9), and with six Premier League home games remaining in 2024-25, there’s a chance even that may be eclipsed, based on this woeful form.
