Shaquille O’Neal claims that when he watches his children play basketball, he makes them anxious.
Although he is “super proud” of all six of his children, the 52-year-old former NBA player tries “not to bother them”—especially when they’re playing basketball—in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE.
On Monday, November 4, Me’Arah O’Neal, 18, who made her NCAA debut with the University of Florida Gators earlier this month, finished her first game with seven points, five rebounds, and two blocks.
Shaq watched his son Shaqir’s debut with the Florida A&M Rattlers, who opened the season against TCU in Fort Worth, Texas, from courtside that same evening.
For the Rattlers this season, 21-year-old Shaqir O’Neal, who spent the previous three seasons at Texas Southern, is averaging 5.7 points and 3.7 rebounds. The 7-foot, 1-inch Hall of Famer recalls, “They get nervous a lot of times when I go watch them play.” “I don’t ever want to make them nervous, so I just try to watch from afar.”Rather, O’Neal tells PEOPLE that he makes an effort “to participate in déjà vu parenting,” stating that his parents raised him in a similar manner.
“I was never very disturbed by my parents. ‘You’re eighteen, you’re an adult,’ they said after raising me to be a certain way.O’Neal, who this month revealed his collaboration with DraftKings, said that he has been using the same strategy, “and it’s been working.”Nevertheless, the NBA commentator from Inside can’t help but brag about Me’Arah.
He remarks, “My baby girl, she had 18 points playing yesterday,” in reference to the Gators’ rout over the Chicago State Cougars, which ended in a score of 104-35.
“I’m incredibly proud of her. I’m really pleased with my son. Okay. I try not to bother any of my children,” he says.O’Neal and his ex-wife, Shaunie O’Neal, have four children together: two daughters, Amirah and Me’arah, and two sons, Shareef and Shaqir. The sportsman also has a daughter, Taahirah, with his ex-girlfriend, Arnetta Yardbourgh, and a stepson, Myles, from Shaunie’s prior relationship. When he’s not seeing his children follow in his big footsteps, O’Neal claims that he’s “always looking to work with brands on new, innovative ways to drive fan engagement around sports.”
Through the NBA Cup Double Up Boost feature of the betting app, O’Neal says he is thrilled for fans to experience the thrill of this season’s NBA Cup thanks to his relationship with DraftKings.
“Throughout the NBA Cup, Sportsbook customers will receive the NBA Cup double up boost every Tuesday and Friday consisting of one NBA same game parlay profit boost, and one NBA live boost,” O’Neal states.
However, O’Neal wants to advise NBA fans to exercise caution this season as sports betting becomes more and more popular. “I also think it’s very important to play responsibly,” he continues. “I want you to keep it fun, I want you to have a game plan, and please stay within your limits.”
