Approximately 400 Warriors staff members lined up along Thompson’s route to the Dallas locker room to express their love and gratitude for the former Golden State star as he walked back into Chase Center on Tuesday night after getting off the team bus.
A few hours after the ball was tipped, Thompson attempted to execute a spontaneous shimmy in the manner of Stephen Curry while the erstwhile Splash Brothers sparred in various outfits.
I appreciate you watching.
The staff members that welcomed Thompson wore “Captain Klay” hats, which were given away to all fans on a night of celebration honoring his 13 years with the team and the four titles he helped earn.
“That was really cool,” remarked Thompson. “I’m really appreciative of the staff for showing me such kindness; it was completely unexpected and made me smile. Something I will always remember.
Video highlights of Thompson were shown in Chase Center, where he is still and always will be adored, and those white caps filled the room. In their first words of the day, Curry rushed up to Thompson, who was now wearing number 31, and his teammate Kyrie Irving, who was wearing number 11. They gave one other a brief embrace before Andrew Wiggins gave his former teammate a hug as well.
Curry was outstanding in the final seconds of Golden State’s 120-117 triumph, but Thompson scored 22 points on 7-for-17 shooting with six 3-pointers. After giving a fan a high five, Thompson threw his white headband into the seats, giving a lucky customer an unexpected memento.
Earlier, Thompson raced out of the tunnel and onto the floor to deafening ovation from Warriors supporters who had their phones up to record his comeback after a quick jump-rope performance outside the Mavericks’ locker room.Thompson remarked, “It was a cool moment to feel the energy from the fans,” “Especially all the chatter that I heard, it was all positive.”
Thompson joined Dallas in July on a three-year, $50 million contract, and the Warriors invited every employee to serve on the welcoming committee. After undergoing surgery on his left knee and right Achilles tendon, Thompson, 34, missed more than two and a half years of the 2019–20 and 2020–21 seasons before returning in January 2022.
