IBF champion Daniel Dubois stopped the former two-time world heavyweight champion, ruining his most recent attempt to win a title. At the end of the first round, Joshua got caught heavy after starting slowly. He never fully recovered from the blow, and after taking a few of his own blows in the fifth round, he was finally taken down by a short right.
The 35-year-old had only lost by stoppage twice in 32 fights, the last time being at Madison Square Garden in 2019 against Andy Ruiz Jr. He hopes to do the same with Dubois after avenging that six months later with a clean 12-round points victory.
Barry McGuigan, a Hall of Fame boxer, stated in an interview with Seconds Out that he believes Joshua should walk before losing a rematch.
“I honestly believe that if Anthony fights Dubois again, it will happen sooner in the rematch. I believe that early in the fight, Dubious will knock him out.The former unified champion was then praised highly by McGuigan.
“Anthony has had amazing success and is an amazing boxer. He ought to go with his abilities intact, in my opinion. He may retire and live a beautiful life since he no longer needs to battle.
“By fighting once more, he is doing himself an injustice. Only one warrior is ascending, and only one is descending. Dubois continues to improve and is a very dangerous boxer.
