The beliefs that individuals adopt significantly influence and mold them for the challenges they may encounter in the future. Facing numerous challenges since childhood is a pivotal factor that shapes an individual, as emphasized by Sonya Curry, who, being married to Stephen Curry and a millionaire herself, echoed a similar sentiment.
In a radio episode of Foster and Friends, NBA fans gained insights into her upbringing. Reflecting on her early life, which was marked by difficulties, Sonya discussed the challenges her family faced when her mother became a single parent at a young age, making it challenging to meet financial obligations.
“We never thought we were poor; we just didn’t think we had much,” she shared. To support her family, Sonya had to take on multiple jobs from a very young age. Grappling with an existential crisis and struggling with her sense of purpose, she admitted not knowing “what my purpose is going to be.” The 57-year-old developed “a lot of substance and class” through her struggles to fit in, eventually finding greater enjoyment and understanding in the process. Reflecting on her childhood, she expressed, “Struggle is about making you better.”
Sonya also expressed gratitude for the support system within her family. Stephen’s mother acknowledged, “I was lucky to have a great support system,” before highlighting the influence of her cousins.
She admired them so much that she aspired “to be like them” after witnessing their journey through college and engagement in sports. Now, there’s a clearer understanding of one crucial aspect.
