When LeBron James and Stephen Curry eventually paired up for the Olympics in Paris, the NBA’s top scorer received more than just a gold medal from the partnership.
James declared on Monday, “It was everything and more,” just before Los Angeles left for their two preseason games against Curry’s Golden State Warriors this coming week.
“I was super excited to be able to finally team up with him in a win-or-die type atmosphere,” said James. “That’s exactly what competing in the Olympics was like. Being a member of that team with Steph was everything I could have ever imagined and hoped for. Great memories. Something I will undoubtedly always remember from my time playing basketball.”Furthermore, James did not brush off the question of whether he could ever see himself playing with Curry as a teammate.
He answered, “I have no idea.”
James and Curry have a rivalry dating back to their days as some of the greatest athletes of their generation. From 2015 to 2018, they faced off in four straight NBA Finals, with Curry’s Warriors defeating James’ Cleveland Cavaliers three times out of four. Before their respective seniors’ pivotal roles in the U.S. victory at the Olympics in Paris, they had never been teammates outside the NBA All-Star games. James outscored Nikola Jokic for a triple-double in the U.S. semifinal triumph over Serbia, while Curry’s flurry of late 3-pointers sealed the gold medal victory over France.
Any possibility of James and Curry playing together again would likely need to occur in the NBA, as the 39-year-old stated this summer that the Paris Games would be his final competition. That seems improbable given that LeBron, along with his son Bronny, is committed to the Lakers for two more seasons and that Curry, 36, is signed with Golden State for three more seasons.
While Curry has stated that he wants to play his entire career with the team that drafted him in 2009, James stated last season that he hopes to end his career with the Lakers. James reaffirmed his admiration for Curry, even if they never again don the same uniform outside of an All-Star Game.
“I understand what Steph has done for this game,” James replied. “By his approach to the game and his manliness, I understand what he’s done for his organization, what he’s done for the community, and people everywhere.” It’s quite wonderful when you get to work with and observe how someone treats their art on a daily basis, and you have that kind of respect for them. It’s something you can simply appreciate and never take for granted.”
Tuesday night in Las Vegas and Friday night in San Francisco are when the Lakers play the Warriors.
