Eddie Hearn maintains that, despite the prospect of a high-profile bout with Joe Joyce or Deontay Wilder, Anthony Joshua’s “No. 1 priority” is a rematch with Daniel Dubois.
The 2012 Olympic gold medallist was defeated by Dubois in the fifth round of their fight on Saturday night in front of a record-breaking crowd at Wembley Stadium.
Given that it was Joshua’s fourth loss in his career, some are wondering how much longer he has to compete. The two-time world heavyweight champion has been connected to several possible rivals.Head of Matchroom promoter Hearn has ruled out fights with Moses Itauma and Joseph Parker, saying that fights with Joe Joyce and Dillian Whyte are “unlikely.”
Hearn goes on to claim that Joshua only thinks about one thing at a time.”I said to him yesterday, who knows, you’ve got between maybe one and three fights left,” he stated to Boxing News.
“I told him that, and he realized where we are in his career, which is why the phone went a little silent. It will just be the most intense clashes imaginable.”While I don’t discount [Deontay] Wilder or [Joe] Joyce, I believe AJ will go for the largest. He is a combatant. Daniel Dubois’s rematch is his top priority.
Given that the two have long been mentioned as rivals—especially in 2018 when they shared all the world titles and as fallen giants in 2023—a matchup with Wilder would be very intriguing.Out of his 48 career fights, the 38-year-old American has suffered four defeats. But all five of those losses have occurred in his previous five fights, two of which were against Tyson Fury.
In June, Wilder was also stopped in the fifth round by Zhilei Zhang; yet, Hearn is interested in a fight with Joshua.”That’s a fight that, prior to Saturday, I thought would never happen,” he said. “But I certainly think it’s a fascinating fight now, and one that people would definitely tune in to.”
