According to Darren Barker, Daniel Dubois won over “a good few” fans with his outstanding performance against Anthony Joshua on Saturday night.
The 96,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium saw Dubois successfully defend his IBF heavyweight title against Joshua, who was the overwhelming favorite. For more than ten years, Joshua has been a prominent figure in British boxing, drawing large crowds to arenas. However, Barker believes that Dubois’ decisive victory may propel Joshua to the top of the rankings.
An aggressive Dubois had Joshua on the back foot from the first bell, dropping “AJ” to the canvas three times before eventually stopping the fight with a knockout strike in the fifth round. The battle was a one-sided contest.Barker speculates that Dubois may have stamped his ticket to British superstardom with such a comprehensive victory over a well-liked opponent.
“In the end, there were just two British fighters present,” DAZN reporter Barker remarked after the bout. “The fan favorite will always be one over the other.
“However, you have to give Dubois credit for the way he handled the situation, the environment, and Anthony Joshua. I believe he will have gained the admiration of many.
“His background differs from Anthony Joshua’s. Dubois has kind of gone unnoticed, yet he’s an Olympic hero who flew the flag and won a gold medal.
“To put in a performance against a national treasure, you can’t help but think it could be a changing of the guard.”
