Once again, JK Rowling has sparked controversy by publicly disparaging transgender athletes. This time, she has targeted transgender Paralympic sprinter Valentina Petrillo with her ire. Petrillo was called a “cheater” by the Harry Potter author, who also questioned the justice of allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports.

Rowling voiced her outrage in a public statement, asking, “Where is the fairness if they’re all transgender? How are they going to compete in women’s events? She compared Petrillo’s situation to that of Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer who was recently given a lifetime ban by the WBO after the organization deemed her to be a man. “Petrillo and Khelif are both attending gatherings they shouldn’t be at. It now comes down to fairness more than identity. These choices are marginalizing women.

 

Rowling’s remarks have sparked a heated debate; some people agree with her position on preserving equity in women’s sports, while others charge her with spreading hateful stereotypes about transgender people. Her juxtaposition of Petrillo and Khelif—two sportsmen with very dissimilar backgrounds—has only served to intensify the dispute.

While detractors contend that Rowling’s remarks perpetuate discriminatory stereotypes that harm the transgender community, others contend that Rowling is addressing a rising concern about sports competition integrity.
