NBA player Steph Curry will auction off specially made sneakers to show support for the Asian culture

To raise money for the families of the victims of the spa shootings that occurred in the Atlanta region last month, Steph Curry will hold an auction of a pair of specially made sneakers.

In an effort to demonstrate support for the Asian community, which has seen a surge in hate crimes over the past year, the Golden State Warriors player wore sneakers that were yellow, white, and black during his team’s Sunday loss to the Atlanta Hawks.

The shoes featured Bruce Lee’s painted visage and his well-known saying, “Under the heavens, there is but one family,” which were created in collaboration with the Bruce Lee Foundation.

“I believe that Stephen’s action exemplifies allyship and solidarity in action,” stated Bruce Lee Foundation board chair Shannon Lee.

“It is a privilege that he would select my father and my family as the emblem for the notion that, as my father once stated, we are all members of one family and must thus support one another.”

Eight individuals were slain in shootings at three spas in the Atlanta region in March, including six Asian women. The tragedy raised awareness of the surge in anti-Asian violence in the US.

Since the start of the pandemic, advocates and authorities claim to have received reports of thousands of xenophobic attacks against Asian individuals.

With the Toronto Raptors in 2019, Jeremy Lin became the first Asian American to win an NBA championship. He has been vocal about his experiences and believes that the Covid-19 pandemic has made an already-existing issue in the nation worse.

He made note of how, in his opinion, some of the language surrounding the virus has fueled prejudice against Asians.

For instance, former US President Donald Trump came under fire for calling the coronavirus the “Kung flu” and the “Chinese virus” while in office.

Prior to the game on Sunday, Curry expressed his displeasure at learning about the shootings in Atlanta to The Undefeated.

He expressed “disgust, horror, and plain anger at why any violence ever occurs in our nation.”

“After everything we have been through in the last year, let alone in our nation’s history, people continue to suffer with needless tragedy and fear for their lives. We must perform better.
