The American Professional Basketball League (NBA) has changed the name of the MVP Trophy award – Most Valuable Player in the regular season, to the name of legendary Michael Jordan – who won this honor 5 times with the Chicago Bulls Club.

The NBA announced the new Michael Jordan Trophy on December 13, along with five trophies named after league pioneers, which will now be presented to the winners of the American Basketball Association’s end-of-season awards.

Jordan, a six-time NBA champion, has won five MVP awards in his 15-season career, second to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who has won six. Abdul-Jabbar’s name is also given to one of the NBA’s annual awards.

Other renamed awards announced were the Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy for outstanding defensive player of the year, Wilt Chamberlain Trophy for best rookie of the year, George Mikan Trophy for most improved player…

The new Michael Jordan Trophy was created with information about the NBA icon’s illustrious career. It features an image of an athlete preparing to score a point with patterned elements that reflect Jordan’s career, including references to jersey number 23 and his six NBA titles.

Previously, the tournament’s MVP Trophy was named after former American Basketball Association President Maurice Podoloff. This person’s name will now be attached to a new award honoring the team with the best performance of the season.
