Michael Jordan was defeated by Shaq in this tҺrilling overtime match.
At Chicago Stadium on January 16, 1993, multi-champion Michael Jordan squared off against Shaquille O’Neal, a rookie at the time. Many had anticipated that the Bulls would easily defeat the youthful Magic, but Shaq and company had other ideas. They shocked the Bulls in overtime, defeating Jordan’s stunning 64-point effort, 128-124.
A memorable evening
Jordan had a memorable evening as he tied his career-high record of 27 field goals made out of 49 tries in the match. With 3.9 seconds remaining, the Bulls led 108-105 and were just one defensive stop away from winning. Now, all that was lacking was the victory.
But the Magic found Nick Anderson, who was wide open, at the top of the key, and he made a 3-pointer to tie the game and force overtime. Shaq and his colleagues then seized over, defeating the Bulls 16–12 in the extra time to clinch an unexpecteԀ victory.
With 31 points and 10 assists, point guard Scott Skiles spearheaded the Magic’s well-rounded offense. Shaq, on the other hand, lived up to the hype with 29 points, 24 rebounds, and five blocks.
After the game, Jordan bemoaned his team’s collapse in the latter minutes of the fourth quarter and could not have cared less about his point total. With less than a minute remaining, they were ahead by six points, but the Magic outscored them 7-1 in that time, forcing overtime.
“I don’t care about the points,” Jordan declared.
We just kind of squandered energy since we didn’t play the entire game as well as we could have. The game was just given away. We made several poor plays, but overall we performed really well. Something is amiss when you blоw a six-point lead in less than a minute. If you lose, earning 64 points is meaningless.
