Even Ian Rush, who scored 346 goals in 346 red shirt games between 1980 and 1996, finds it hard to comprehend how far Mohamed Salah has come in the six and a half years since the Egyptian’s debut at Anfield.
On Saturday at Crystal Palace, Salah scored his 200th goal for Liverpool, marking the achievement in 327 games and solidifying his fifth-place ranking on the all-time Reds record, which is headed by Rush.
Reaching 200 goals is a significant accomplishment in and of itself, Rush told Liverpoolfc.com. First of all, congrats on that! Not many people accomplish that!
“He is not only a fantastic football player but also a fantastic role model for people all over the world. His impact has been phenomenal.” He is revered as a god in Egypt, where he has bestowed upon young men and women the hope that they may one day play professional football. He is the kind of person that he is.
After joining Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017, Salah made an immediate impression by scoring 44 goals across all competitions in his debut season.
In the five whole campaigns that followed, he went on to score at least 23, and this season, he has already rushed to 14 strikes.
Rush states, “As a player, he can hardly do any more.” “When I watch him now, his entire game is a million times better than it was when he initially arrived.
“He was just having fun scoring goals when he arrived. He’s now having fun making and scoring goals! These days, his assists are equally as significant as his goals, demonstrating his development into a true all-around player.
Salah is well known, therefore his feats come as no surprise to them. Jürgen Klopp has talked about his No. 11’s unwavering attitude and drive to perform at the best levels, and his teammates at the AXA Training Centre are in awe of his professionalism and conditioning. Salah is thought of as a standard-bearer both on and off the field.
Rush comments, “His mentality is incredible.” “In my opinion, the most crucial quality for a forward is mental toughness.
I wouldn’t be concerned if I missed ten opportunities because I would always believe that I will make the next one. You will struggle greatly without that resilience.
“Mo has that tenacity for sure. He is constantly convinced. He accepts that he is there to provide, knowing that.
“I have spoken to him quite a bit,” Rush continued. When we discuss the game, your ambition to always get better comes up.
“Even if we go back to when he hurt his shoulder in the 2018 Champions League final in Kiev. How did he act? He vanished and returned, more powerful than before. His current physique gives the impression that he will never be hurt.
“He said, ‘No, I’m going to do the work, make myself stronger, and improve.’ Some people would have felt sorry for themselves.”
And he carried it out. He is constantly getting better. His current level of all-around performance is excellent, but it stems from his mindset. He studies his losses just as intensely as his wins, looking for ways to improve and bounce back.
That’s what distinguishes him as a unique player.
When asked which of Salah’s first 200 goals for Liverpool he liked best, Rush beams.
“There have been a ton,” he exclaimed. And Mo’s greatest quality is that he scores all kinds of goals. He enjoys scoring from outside the area just as much as he does collecting a rebound off the keeper.
However, two goals—both against Manchester City—stand out. The one [in 2021] at Anfield where he dribbled them. And the second one [in 2022] where Alisson helped him was the one I’ve always admired. I consider the two of them.Big games, as it happens. Salah is a top player when he scores goals against the best teams and gets the crucial goals.
“I find greater satisfaction in scoring the game-winning goal in a crucial 1-0 victory than in netting three goals in a 6-0 victory.”
Naturally, Salah now embarks on a quest for even more objectives, achievements, and medals.
Even if Rush’s record may still be far off, the Reds great would be thrilled to watch the Egyptian King approach his total in the upcoming days, weeks, and months.
“Let me just commend him on his records—they seem to come out every week!” Rush comes to an end. However, he consistently comments on my objectives in the same way. He questioned whether I had counted my training goals once!
It’s wonderful to have records, but they are meant to be broken. If he breaks one of mine, that’s fantastic. This indicates that Liverpool is doing well and that the team always comes first.
“Mo loves setting records, but the main thing that happens when he does that is the team succeeds, and that’s what we all want.”
However, I can only commend him for his accomplishments thus far. He’s a unique participant. Let’s hope he stays for a few more years because the audience adores him.
