Tristan Thompson submitted to become Amari Thompson’s legal guardian subsequent to their mother Andrea’s demise in January, during which time he assumed the primary caregiving role for his younger brother.
On Friday, the erstwhile partner of Khloé Kardashian and an NBA free agent filed legal documents in which he sought sole legal guardianship of his 17-year-old brother.
Tristan, 32, alleged in court documents obtained by PEOPLE that their father Trevor Thompson has been non-existent in the life of their younger sibling since 2014. As a result, Tristan is the only remaining family member capable of providing the necessary care for the adolescent.
As a result of Amari’s epilepsy and other medical conditions, Thompson intends to provide round-the-clock care through guardianship.
“Amari is a minor and has medical conditions that render him unable to take care of himself or seek gainful employment,” according to the court papers.
According to court documents, Amari resides with Tristan in his Hidden Hills, California residence.
“Appointing a guardian for Amari would be in his best interest because it would ensure that someone would be responsible for providing and fulfilling his basic needs,” according to the declaration. “Further, Amari is set to receive a modest inheritance from his recently deceased mother and a guardian wouldn’t be able to manage and invest in Mary’s inheritance on his behalf.”
The court documents indicate that Amari has been granted a sum of $103,475 from the estate of his mother. Tristan would assume responsibility for safeguarding the inheritance and coordinating Amari’s medical appointments and care. According to court documents, Tristan also intends to submit an application for U.S. citizenship on behalf of Amari, who was born in Canada.
